In a sense everything that Bakhtin went on to write ¯ows from the basic philosophical premises established in `Philosophy of the Act', and it therefore seems appropriate to begin my study with an analysis of this essay. towards a philosophy of the act Bakhtin employs a set of basic oppositions as a framework for his thinking. The most important of these is the distinction between the `given' (dannyi) and `posited' (zadannyi) modes of reality. The `given' mode is characterised by closure and stasis.

Moreover, the self-sacri®cial action leads to life (in Bakhtin, the enrich- 32 Christianity in Bakhtin ment of the event of being).
