Hieroglyphics The Egyptian system of writing was called hieroglyphics, and the symbols it used were called hieroglyphs. Whereas the English alphabet uses only twenty-six letters, hieroglyphics made use of some 700 different symbols. There were two types of hieroglyphs, pictograms, which looked like the things they represented—for example, a picture of flowing water to stand for the word ”water”—and phonograms, which stood for an entire syllable. For an English speaker, the concept of a phonogram is difficult to understand: It would be as though the “syl” in syllable, for instance, could be represented with just one letter instead of three.
