In an older scholastic tradition of Medieval realism) (Burke 1966:23). In a proper compendium of American semiotics, one would want to sift writings like Burke's judiciously from those of less semiotically saturated littérateurs, so that one would presumably meet the standards of one of Eco's hypotheses for the makeup of a history of semiotics, requiring "an impressive re-reading of the whole history of philosophy, and maybe many other disciplines" (1983:80), notably, I think, the history of criticism.

Many prominent individuals were, naturally, invited to represent each of these disciplines. , Sebeok et al. 1972:139, 232). In 1970, Goffman and I amicably coorganized and ran an international conference (sponsored by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research).

He employed both the technical nounnote its spelling (Sebeok 1985b:5152)and the adjective freely and with astonishing accuracy and versatility. ) In 1880, for example, Mallery characterized his own writings as native semiotics (reprinted in Umiker-Sebeok and Sebeok 1978:8).
