I wasn't able to sketch people or animals with enough speed to actually capture something significant. And traveling into extremely remote regions of Kashmir on horseback didn't make it easy to stop for any length of time to sketch or paint. This became frustrating for someone as visually oriented as I am, so I began to make a concerted effort to try new things and new ways of drawing. It wasn't until one day at the New Delhi Zoo that things began to change for the better. On several daylong sketching excursions something happened that suddenly opened my eyes and began to revolutionize how I sketched.
Practice This Skill With Each Subject I've used the same skill with each of the images below—a few moments studying the image looking for the simplest shapes and then fifteen seconds sketching. Let's begin simply. Here's a classic landscape with a nice composition. Look at the subject for a few moments. Study my sketch below. I isolated the most essential shapes of the riverbank, a few tree shapes and the far distant horizon using the simplest outline of their forms. With only a glance or two you can capture a basic outline of very complicated shapes.
The most essential difference between a drawing and a sketch is the speed at which they were drawn. This is a studio illustration, worked on slowly from good slides. Drawing Drawing is what we normally do when our subject doesn't move around much and we have lots of time. Drawing is like writing a story in longhand. Drawings can be very realistic, detailed, elaborate and complete in every value. Drawing is slow. Here I've chosen a perfect example of one of my quick sketches, done from a cheetah at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
